I motsats till min ordinarie blogg (www.nilsonne.se) hade jag inte tänkt ha någon vetenskap här, men detta kan jag inte låta bli att ta med. Vad sägs om följande:
"Sequence analysis of the FOXI3 gene in hairless and coated Chinese crested dogs revealed a 7-bp duplication within exon 1 that produces a frameshift and a premature stop codon. We found perfect concordance of the duplication with the CED phenotype in 140 hairless dogs from the three studied breeds... Although it is unclear whether the mutant protein is actually expressed, with more than 95% of the normal FOXI3 protein missing, it is unlikely that the mutant protein is functional. Any mutant protein produced will contain 218 altered amino acids and could potentially interfere with normal cellular function in a dominant negative mechanism. However, we think the most likely explanation for the CED phenotype in hairless dogs is haploinsuffiency of FOXI3 caused by the 7-bp duplication. According to this hypothesis, a complete lack of FOXI3 in homozygous mutants causes the embryonic lethality."
Detta kommer ur en ny artikel i Science om just hårlöshet hos hundar. Jag undrar hur många som kan läsa och förstå texten. Gissningsvis ganska få. Är det rimligt? Borde likande artiklar ha en sammanfattning som alla kan begripa? Borde vi lägga mer tid på att göra allmänheten "scientifically literate"?
I mina mer dystra stunder tycker jag att vår bristfälliga förmåga att förklara vetenskap är ett stort demokratiproblem, och ett av skälen till att vi får ta itu med problem som vi hade kunnat undvika om vi hade agerat litet klokare... (Dvs med mer hänsyn tagen till fakta...)

Å andra sidan skulle det bli väldigt svårt att uttrycka sig om man inte fick hjälp av den precision som fackspråket medför. Det är ju inte bara vetenskapen som har ett svårtillgängligt språk - jag har svårt att förstå vad byggare talar om, exempelvis.
Kanske är problemet att alltför få forskare vänder sig till allmänheten vid sidan av att kommunicera i de traditionella vetenskapliga kanalerna?
Men det finns också stora problem med hur vetenskap framställs i traditionella media. Bed Goldacre skriver tänkvärt i sin senaste bok: "Nobody dumbs down the finance pages. I can barely understand most of the sports section. In the literature pull-out, there are five-page-long essays which I find completely impenetrable, where the more Russian novelists you can rope in the cleverer everybody thinks you are. I do not complain about this: I envy it."
Frågan är kanske vad vi behöver förstå? Just genetiken berör oss alla, och därför tycker jag att det är särskilt angeläget att hjälpa människor att förstå något av hur det går till att bygga och underhålla en levande organism utifrån ett proteinstyntesperspektiv...
